Get Legal Help

Being involved in civil litigation can be intimidating. You may feel there is no one to turn to for information, directions, or advice. You may feel you cannot afford to hire someone to help, but help is available.

Legal service programs offer information and advice. They may also provide legal representation on some civil legal issues. The information provided here explains where you can get legal help and what fees you may have to pay.

Limited Representation

You can hire a lawyer to advise you, or to complete only some parts of your case, based on what you can afford to pay. Hiring a lawyer to provide limited help while you represent yourself helps ensure your rights are protected and that you know what to do at different stages of your case.

Kansas Legal Services: 800-723-6953

Kansas Legal Services is a statewide nonprofit corporation dedicated to helping low-income Kansans meet their basic needs by providing essential legal, mediation, and employment training services. Its free or low-cost services are offered to Kansas residents involved in civil cases who meet eligibility requirements related to income, case type, and other criteria, like age or county of residence.

The toll-free number operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Access to Justice Advice Line: 800-675-5860

The Access to Justice Advice Line is open to income-eligible Kansas residents who need help with civil or domestic legal matters. Advice is offered over the phone by a paralegal supervised by a Kansas Legal Services attorney. Callers who have incomes that exceed 150 percent of the poverty level, who have a direct conflict of interest, or who are calling about an ineligible legal matter like a criminal charge or traffic offense are offered other options, including informational brochures, referrals to community resources, help locating an attorney, or legal advice for $3 per minute.

Kansas Elder Law Hotline: 1-888-353-5337

The hotline serves any Kansas resident aged 60 or older without regard to income. The hotline provides senior citizens access to an attorney to advise them about legal questions in civil cases and referrals to other resources when needed.

Kansas Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service: 800-928-3111

The Kansas Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service has trained client representatives who listen to callers to understand their particular legal needs and then links them to lawyers in private practice who have knowledge and skills in a particular area of law. Each lawyer sets his or her own fees and charges, but the caller decides whether to retain the lawyer. A caller who decides not to retain the lawyer may call the service for another referral.
